Short answer: yes, in most cases, and it's one of the more common ways homeowners accidentally damage their own house trying to clean it.

What pressure washing can do to a roof

Asphalt shingles are covered in small granules that protect them from UV damage and give them their texture. High-pressure water aimed directly at a roof can strip those granules away, which shortens the life of the shingles even if the roof looks clean afterward. In worse cases, the force can lift or dislodge shingles outright, or drive water underneath them where it can cause leaks that don't show up until much later.

This is why professional roof cleaners use soft washing instead: a cleaning solution kills the algae, moss, or lichen causing the discoloration, and a low-pressure rinse removes it without touching the shingles with force.

What pressure washing can do to siding

Vinyl and wood siding are both vulnerable in different ways. High pressure can crack or warp vinyl panels, and it can force water behind the siding into the wall cavity, which creates conditions for mold growth you won't see until it's already a problem. On wood siding, pressure washing can strip paint and even gouge the surface if the nozzle is held too close.

Stucco is its own case. It looks tough but is actually somewhat porous, and high pressure can wear away the surface texture over repeated cleanings.

So what should be pressure washed?

Hard, non-porous surfaces built to withstand force: concrete driveways, sidewalks, pavers, and similar surfaces. These are designed to be walked and driven on, so they can generally handle direct pressure without damage.

What we do differently

We match the method to the surface rather than defaulting to high pressure for everything. Roofs and siding get soft washed. Driveways and hard, flat concrete surfaces get pressure washed. It's a small distinction that makes the difference between a house that looks clean and a house that's actually been protected in the process.
